PROBLEM:

How can we help readers keep track of various story elements, including characters, locations, and terms, especially in

X-Ray a book - create a reference tool that will provide definitions and references for anything mentioned on the page

How do you build an intuitive Admin Center and future-proof it for growth?

Admin Center is a tool for Account Administrators to view and grant license requests, modify security settings, and manage the company’s Smartsheet account. The homepage displays a summary of the most relevant tasks and statuses. To allow for future content growth and seamless display on all screen sizes, I also designed a responsive grid system that was adopted by all other design teams in the org

My Role:

Collaborated with the VP of Design to define the problem

Created the experience and refined it via multiple iterations

Prototyped a detailed walk-through that was demoed in to senior stakeholders during annual planning

FUTURE-PROOF FOR GROWTH

Designing for Kindle E-Ink is very different from designing for other devices because of E-Ink display technology is limited and does not allow the same richness of interactions as regular devices. It requires understanding of unique characteristics and limitations of E-Ink Technology

CHALLENGE:

Create an awesome experience using developing technology on a device with unique parameters that restrict what can be implemented

SOLUTION:

  • Understand what can and cannot be done e-ink

  • Collaborate with engineers to verify design proposal and adjust functionality to fit within constrains of the device

  • Adopt best practices from other devices but adjust and simplify  to make them work for E-Ink

  • "Less is more" - simplify as much as possible

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS:

  •  Slower refresh rates that affect transitions and scrolling

  •  Limited color patterns as only grayscale is supported

  •  Slower touch-screen interaction patterns limit what can be implemented

  •  Reading-centered focus  makes layout and typography especially important

  •  Varying device form factors require adapting designs to different layouts

  •  Performance considerations shift design focus to clarity and simplicity

  •  Customer expectations require customizations to font sizes and contrast

The key idea of Kindle Leaf was to allow customers to browse books via categories that matched their actual needs. The first step would be to allow the customers to choose the criteria they want to use to discover books - by their current mood, or by the amount of time they want to spend reading
