[PLACEHOLDER TEXT] In a Customer-Centered Design Process, I usually define problems to solve and  desired customer outcomes before starting design work.  However, this project was different because is started as a vision of a new type of functionality rather than a solution to a specific problem, and so these outcomes surfaced and were refined during the design process.

ROADMAP & NORTH STAR VISION

Site design of the site has not been updated in years, had multiple usability issues. Codebase was old, making it very difficult to update efficiently. Both front end and back-end Dev teams had very little availability, and I had to work around the dev schedules and sequence the updates according to which devs were available at a given time. Because of these challenges, we released small batches of updates every month, making steady progress towards our long-term design vision, rather than in a single major release.

UX Roadmap

Panopto

A long-term initiative to modernize the UX and fix usability issues

Our site looked outdated, causing sales objections, customer complaints, and making it harder to build new features as they had to be designed around limitations of available components.

We needed a redesign our entire site, update our design system, and resolve numerous usability issues. This was a big challenge, but also an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the true value of great design and move the org towards a design-led culture.

My Role:

Created a list of proposed changes to modernize our UX

Collaborated with Engineers, Sales, Stakeholders to prioritize changes

Directed work of design team and worked as an individual contributor

At-a-glance overview and a visualization of key book concepts

Kindle X-Ray is a visual summary of a book. It displays definitions of characters, locations, and terms. It provides readers with a deeper understanding of the content by offering contextual information about characters, terms, and concepts within a book. It is also shows locations where characters, locations, and terms are mentioned. It is especially useful for referencing concepts and ideas within non-fiction books, or for looking up character details in long multi-volume fiction books such as Game of Thrones.

My Role:

SVP of Kindle asked me to explore ways to "X-Ray" a text and display the "bones" of the book - key concepts and ideas visually

I defined the requirements, created UX and iterated on UX until we reached executive sign-off and alignment with other Kindle teams

Collaborated with PM and Dev to get the feature built and shipped to customers.

Update the look and feel of the site to create modern, clean Library that our customers expect, with minimal changes to functionality and work around the dev team schedule

Make small, "bite-sized" changes to improve our look and feel over time, raising our design bar and communicating our commitment to quality to customers
